Overview

Michael was just eight years old when his father and mother purchased the land and took a hands-on approach to building the family home. Now, decades later, Michael and partner Jan have chosen to honour that legacy by thoughtfully expanding and modernising the property to suit the needs of his growing family—while preserving the character and craftsmanship of the original build.

Challenges

One of the main challenges was seamlessly blending old with new. This included carefully preserving the original wallpaper, updating the bathrooms to meet modern standards while maintaining their classic aesthetic, and upgrading the kitchen with contemporary features—all while retaining the original doors to preserve the home's 1950s charm.

Solutions

The renovation included the addition of two new bedrooms and an extension of the upper living area, complete with a new deck to take full advantage of the ocean views. At the front of the property, a new entrance and carport were added, enhancing both functionality and street appeal.

Outcome

The result is a unique and personal blend of mid-century character and modern comfort: a respectful update that honours the past while embracing the future.
